Crowd Sourcing Sermon for August 21

“On the Jewish High Holy Days, should we be praying mostly for the Jewish people, or for all humankind?”
One of the innovations of the Reform Movement’s new High Holy Day Prayerbook is in the “Kaddish” and in the prayer “Oseh Shalom,” we pray for peace “on us and on all Israel” (al kol Israel), but we add “on all who dwell on earth” (al kol yoshvei teivel).  [Mishkan HaNefefesh, p. 70 and p. 90].

    We pray for all who dwell on earth .

    We , ,the Jewish people are one tribe . . . among scores of human tribes .
    We human beings are all connected , and also connected to all life . . including animals .

    Hello , LUCA .
    LUCA is the acronym for Last Universal Common Ancestor : the First life on this planet ( so say scientists ) .

    LUCA lived about 3.7 billion years ago , 10 billion years after The Big Bang . LUCA was a one-cell bacterium-like organism .

    So the Torah kind of got it right in the second creation story when we meet Adam , the common ancestor of ALL of humanity ( B’resheet 2:7 ) : ” Then the Lord God formed man ( Adam ) from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life , and man became a living soul . ”

    The founder of the theory of evolution , Charles Darwin himself , proposed the theory of universal common descent thru an evolutionary process . In 1859 he wrote in his famous book ” On the Origin of Species : ” I infer that probably all the organic beings which have ever lived on this earth have descended from ONE PRIMORDIAL FORM , into which life was first breathed ” .
    ( sounds like Darwin’s version of the Adam creation story ) .

    The current civil rights slogan ” Black lives matter ” is true because ALL LIVES MATTER because we are all connected .

    Our human theme-song could be ” We Are Family ” .

    Shalom , cousin .

    We pray for ALL mankind , because we , species Homo sapiens sapiens , are all related . We all share a common genome ( the DNA code for life ) .

    When it comes to universal origins ,
    we Jews are blessed with not 1 , not 2 , but at least
    3 Creation stories :
    # 1 : 6-days , then Shabbat ;
    # 2 : single common ancestor , Adam ;
    # 3 : Kabballah mysticism : Divine brightness and contraction .

    I like the Adam creation Myth of B’re’sheet 2:27 the best because it imagines a Single Common Ancestor of all mankind … a current widespread scientific theory strengthened by the teachings of Charles Darwin.

    Besides its message of the unity all mankind , the Adam story is the springboard of several very powerful ethical
    ideas/ideals , some expressed with brilliance in Talmud tractate Sanhedrin viii 4 – 9 :
    ” why was only a single specimen of man created first ?
    To teach us that he who destroys a single soul destroys a whole world ;

    Furthermore , so that no race or class may claim a nobler ancestry , claiming ‘ our father was born first ‘ ;

    and finally , to give testament to the greatness of the Lord ,
    who caused the wonderful diversity of mankind to emanate from one type.

    And why was Adam created last of all beings ? to teach him humility , for if he be overbearing , let him remember that the little fly preceded him in the order of creation . ”

    I truly believe that we all are Family . . the Human Family .

      Selicha .. I am sorry .. I omitted one other Rabbinic midrash ( which has become the slogan of the Israeli Blood Service , the Magen David Adom ) : ” he/she who saves one life has preserved the whole world “

    Expressed in Latin :

    E Pluribus Unum = from many races and ethnic groups , one original common ancestor .

    My last ( I promise ! ) comment on human connectedness comes from the famous poem by John Donne ” No Man is an Island ” :

    No man is an island,
    Entire of itself,
    Every man is a piece of the continent,
    A part of the main.

    If a clod be washed away by the sea,
    Europe is the less.
    As well as if a promontory were.
    As well as if a manor of thy friend’s
    Or of thine own were:

    Any man’s death diminishes me,
    Because I am involved in mankind,

    And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls;
    It tolls for thee.

    John Donne
